Abstract

Sumbangan Muslim terhadap Barat ialah sejarah yang dilupakan. Justeru itu, makalah ini membincangkan sumbangan utama tamadun Islam terhadap tamadun moden Barat. Ia menolak  kenyataan anti-Islam yang mendakwa Islam tidak memberi sebarang sumbangan terhadap tamadun moden selain keganasan. Melalui Baghdad dan Andalus, kajian ini menegaskan bahawa umat Islam telah memberikan pelbagai sumbangan penting dalam pelbagai aspek kehidupan. Dengan menumpukan kepada perkembangan sains, perubatan, dan institusi pendidikan, ia menunjukkan pencapaian Muslim dalam bidang-bidang tersebut. Dalam masa yang sama, ia juga menunjukkan ketika Muslim menghasilkan penemuan-penemuan sains yang penting; Barat masih jauh mundur ke belakang  di “Era Kegelapan”. Justeru itu para penuntut ilmu dan sarjana daripada Eropah bertumpu ke pusat-pusat keilmuan Islam yang terkenal terutamanya di Andalus. Melalui interaksi tersebut, tamadun Islam memberi sumbangan yang penting dalam membawa perubahan kepada Barat—mengeluarkannya  daripada kemunduran kepada kemodenan dan kemajuan. Ini terhasil melalui para pelajar dan ilmuan Eropah yang terlibat secara aktif dalam penterjemahan ilmu-ilmu Islam ke bahasa-bahasa Eropah.
