Abstract

Leisure is a branch of social science that focuses on understanding and analyzing leisure time in society. The leisure time can be described as a condition where one interacts with the environment in an optimum way. Effective leisure time management can ensure the well-being of positive emotions in one's self. The importance of emotional well-being is very important as it can influence the excellence of academic life and other life affairs. However, leisure activities in Malaysia are still poorly understood and unplanned and may result in unavailability of leisure time especially for young Malaysians. Hence a study was conducted to identify the degree of involvement of excellent students of matriculation colleges in leisure activities and to see their relationship to the  emotional well-being. The study involved a total of 100 excellent male and female  students from various ethnic groups. Quantitative data collection through questionnaires was divided into three main sections, namely; sociodemography, leisure activities and  emotional well-being based on the Subjective Wellbeing Assessment for Survey Research(SWASR) that have been developed on a Likert scale. The data were analyzed using pearson correlation test to observe the relationship between leisure activities and emotional well-being. The result of the analysis found that coefficient of r between leisure time and emotional well being was between 0.32-0.43 with p <0.05. This suggests that there is significant relationship between leisure activities and emotional well-being. However, the T test shows that there are differences between sex and sports activities, but all male and female students show their involvement in leisure activities with moderate high scores. This study has shown that the higher the involvement of leisure activities increases the well-being of one's emotional well-being.

Abstrak

Masa senggang  adalah cabang sains sosial yang memberi tumpuan kepada memahami dan menganalisa masa lapang dalam masyarakat. Masa senggang boleh digambarkan sebagai keadaan dimana apabila seseorang itu berinteraksi dengan alam sekitar dengan cara yang optimum. Pengurusan masa senggang  yang efektif dapat  menjamin kesejahteraan emosi positif dalam diri seseorang. Kepentingan kesejahteraan emosi adalah sangat penting kerana ia dapat memberikan pengaruh terhadap kecemerlangan hidup dari segi akademik dan urusan kehidupan yang lain. Namun begitu aktiviti masa senggang di Malaysia masih lagi kurang difahami dan tidak dirancang dan menyebabkan aktiviti masa senggang tidak dapat dimanfaatkan terutamanya golongan muda di Malaysia. Justeru, satu kajian diadakan bagi mengenal pasti apakah tahap penglibatan pelajar cemerlang kolej matrikulasi dalam aktiviti masa senggang dan melihat hubungannya dengan kesejahteraan emosi. Kajian ini melibatkan seramai 100 pelajar  cemerlang akademik  lelaki dan perempuan dari pelbagai etnik.  Pengumpulan data kuantitatif melalui borang soal selidik  yang telah dibahagikan kepada tiga bahagian utama, iaitu; sosiodemografi, aktiviti masa senggang dan kesejahteraan emosi positif berdasarkan kepada  Subjective Wellbeing Assessment for Survey Research yang telah disusun berdasarkan skala likert. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan ujian kolerasi pearson bagi melihat hubungan aktiviti masa senggang dengan kesejahteraan emosi. hasil analisis didapati nilai pekali r di antara aktiviti masa senggang dengan kesejahteraan emosi adalah diantara 0.32-0.43 dengan nilai  p<0.05. Ini menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yanag signifikan diantara aktiviti masa senggang dengan kesejahteraan emosi. Manakal ujian T pula  menunjukkan terdapat perbezaan antara jantina terhadap aktiviti sukan dan rekreasi, namun begitu kesemua pelajar lelaki dan perempuan menunjukkan penglibatan terhadap aktiviti masa senggang dengan skor sederhana tinggi. Kajian ini telah menunjukkan bahawa semakin tinggi penglibatan aktiviti masa senggang semakin tinggi kesejahteraan individu.
